GaryH
I just upgraded to Pro version 6 after using version 3 for many years. Explorer no longer has a column that shows the program associated with the macro, just the scope of either Global or Window/Program Specific. You can't sort by program anymore, and you now have to step through the entire list while keeping your eye on the footer to find macros associated with a specific program. Is this intentional? Am I missing something that will show all macros associated with a specific program?
terrypin
Hi, Do you mean the Category? If so, have you enabled that column as I've shown here? Terry, East Grinstead, UK
GaryH
Nope, that's a user-entered value. I mean the actual program assigned in the scope: The part I underlined is the Program specified in the scope. That used to appear in a sortable column, which was essential for finding all macros associated with a specific program. Now that that column doesn't exist, I don't see any way to find all macros with the scope "SEGUIDE.EXE"
acantor
I think you might be referring to the Activation pane, which I have never noticed before. I have it hidden. When I toggled it on, it displays the program name for application-specific scripts. Explorer > Options > Preferences > Appearance > Explorer > Macro List Check "Show Activation Pane"
acantor
It would be helpful to be able to see the program or Window name in a column in the Macro Explorer. Consider making a feature request!
GaryH
The Activation pane is what's in my screenshot in the previous post. That only shows the program for the currently selected macro. What is missing is the column that showed the program for all macros. It's sad is that it was a feature in prior versions, but was removed. I'll make the request to resurrect it. Thanks.
terrypin
Indeed. I've often wanted to sort by Scope and am surprised to learn that this is a feature of MX3, yet not of MX Pro.
acantor
It's been so long since I regularly used Version 3, I guess I had never noticed the lack. But a column listing the program or window name, distinct from the Scope category, would be a very helpful addition!
terrypin
I no longer have MX3 installed so I can’t try it myself, but how does it handle multiple and ‘Global Except’ scopes?

I don't have v3 installed either, but I was thinking that was the reason the column was removed. I never assigned multiple programs to a scope, so I never ran into the issue. If they decide to resurrect the column, they could show only program names for macros with a single program and a literal such as "Multiple" for the others. Is it possible to have ver 6 and ver 3 installed on the same machine? If so, I'll check out how version 3 handles multiples.

GaryH
Here's what shows in V3. I was wrong that it was a dedicated column. It's appended to the scope category, but is still useful for sorting. Multiple programs are just listed in alphabetical order. Sorting doesn't work for any but the first, but it's a minor drawback. terrypin
Thanks. That’s rather what I expected. And I’d assume any ‘Global Except...’ scopes would also show as a small group, with the sort by the first exception.
acantor
What does the column show if a script is both program specific and window specific? (This is not something I do often, but I have done it. These days, though, I am more likely make a script program specific, and then check for a specific windows in the script... )
acantor
I recognize that this is not an ideal solution, but a workaround is to name your Categories after the applications the scripts are intended for.
amonaghan
acantor, This is what I have always done since version 3.
terrypin
My current Explorer layout has 82 categories (and six have up to eight sub-categories). While some are well overdue for renaming or removal, in general their names reflect what I'd broadly call 'work areas'. Of the 82, 47 have names which match programs. The great majority of the macros in these categories are scoped either to that specific program (and/or one of its windows) or to Global. With this approach, finding or navigating through my two thousand or so macros is not a big problem. Nevertheless, it would still be handy if the Scope field carried more useful data (like MX 3), instead of just 'Global' or 'Window/Program Specific'. -------------------- However, excusing my digression, if I had to prioritise I'd place much more weight on other improvements. In particular, extending Last Run to include sub-macros, and preserving that field after a Macro Express Pro version change, rather than reverting every entry to 'Never'. GaryH
Thanks to both of you for the tips. They inspire me to use MX a lot more than I do.
